The people of Thymaril once spoke often of their direct encounters with the gods. The gods of Thymaril’s pantheon were deeply involved in the realm’s affairs, taking a hands-on approach in shaping the world and its inhabitants from the very beginning. However, this intense involvement eventually drew the ire of the elder deities, known as the Genesis Gods. Concerned by the growing interference, the Genesis Gods decreed a severe punishment: the slaying of both the gods of good and evil by their fellow deities.
This act served as both judgment and warning. While the remaining gods were still expected to guide and support their worshipers, they were now forbidden from tipping the cosmic balance through overt interference. As the final blows were struck, an incessant darkness descended upon Thymaril, also commanded by the Genesis Gods, as an enduring symbol. This darkness stands as a solemn reminder that every being has a role within existence, and transgressing those boundaries can lead to profound and lasting consequences, for all.
The punishment upon mortals manifested as a darkness that blanketed all of Thymaril for an entire century. This shadow not only altered the rhythm of daily life, but reshaped the very world itself. Nocturnal creatures and races began to thrive—raiding, expanding, and even evolving to suit the endless night. Cities swelled in size, becoming havens for those seeking safety from the encroaching darkness.
Though intended as a consequence for mortals, the gods, too, felt the impact. As the needs of the people shifted, so too did their prayers, and the deities they turned to. Some gods waned in power and influence, while others surged as their domains became more vital to survival. Entire generations lived and died without ever seeing daylight, and many questioned whether the sun would ever rise again.
After a hundred years, light finally returned. The Genesis Gods partially lifted their curse, the event becoming known among mortals as “Light’s Return.” However, unknown to them, the gods had preserved part of their warning. They decreed that each year, for the entire month of Maenollya, darkness would once again fall upon Thymaril. Since Light’s Return, that month has remained eternally shrouded in night—a lasting reminder of the cost of divine overreach and mortal dependence.
For some, such as the drow native to the region now known as the Black Sun Mountains, Light’s Return was not a welcome event. These surface-dwelling drow had adapted to life above ground during the century of darkness. With the return of sunlight, they faced a grim choice: retreat back underground, where the goblin horde had already become a persistent and dangerous threat, or wield powerful magic requiring the unified strength of their entire civilization.
Choosing defiance over retreat, the drow channeled the combined might of their arcane and divine casters to create three vast voids—hovering wells of shadow that emit darkness across miles of mountainous terrain. Though this drastic solution brought its own challenges, the drow of the Black Sun Mountains have since begun to reclaim and rebuild their way of life.
For the rest of Thymaril, Light’s Return, despite the enduring annual month of darkness, has been widely embraced as a return to normalcy and peace. Great cities such as Merthalis, the Trade City, have flourished in the renewed light, transforming this new era into a boon for the realm. Each year, during the month of Juntarya, the month following the darkness, Merthalis hosts the Festival of Light’s Return. This month-long celebration draws travelers from across Thymaril to trade rare goods, forge new alliances, and partake in grand public games. Cities like Merthalis have rekindled hope, prosperity, and a sense of unity among the people.
